You will not agree with all of the adages in this book. In fact, some of the adages may provoke or even anger you. Our goal is to encourage Christian business leaders to examine their decisions and actions from a Christian perspective. If a few of the sayings lead you to reconsider a decision and align it with God’s will, then our mission is accomplished.

This book will inspire some of you to step out and start running your business according to God’s plan, while others will remain preoccupied by a big mortgage, multiple car payments, kids in college, and fear of bringing religion into their business.

To be clear, we’re not suggesting that you trade your Escalade for a donkey. Nor are we remotely suggesting that profit is bad—on the contrary, we believe that profit is mandatory, and the more, the better, as it fuels the Great Commission in all its myriad facets, including making a payroll.

Your business is a powerful launchpad to embark on the Great Commission, yoke yourself with other Christian businessmen, and go forth, mutually navigating hazards while generating the physical and spiritual profit that comes from faithfully living the Gospel and spreading its message. It’s time to step out of the shadows and into the light.

You’ll pick up several themes from the adages. Small is good. Scale is bad. Control is necessary. Shun investors. Partnering is powerful. Courage is required. Banish the lawyers. Honesty rules. Get out of the shadows. Get on your knees. Pray. Trust in God. Enjoy the adventure!

This book was not designed to be read cover to cover. Instead, each adage was conceived as a stand-alone vignette that can prompt discussion and reflection on key aspects of running a Christian enterprise. The adages were created to respond to critical decisions you may need to make in the day-to-day operation of your business. Each adage is composed of four parts:

1. Adage. Each adage is a concise statement designed to stimulate reflection on how it can be applied to your business.

2. Response. This is our response to the adage. We’re not asking you to agree with it. Instead, we hope our response will inspire you to consider your response to the adage.

3. Scriptural Reference. We’ve selected specific scriptural references that we believe will help you consider God’s will as you make these important decisions.

4. Questions. The questions are designed to spark discussion and debate. Some of the questions are intended to provoke you into considering the ramifications of how you have done things in the past and their relevance in the decisions you’re making today.

Additionally, there is a free PDF worksheet you can download at the bottom of each adage.
